Nepo Baby vs LAPO Baby in Lagos Life: Which Start Is Better?

What you actually get as a Nepo Baby or a LAPO Baby, how the start lottery works, which first home to pick in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, and why the UNILAG student start is underrated.

In Nigeria a "nepo baby" is the child whose daddy knows people. A "LAPO baby" is the opposite: someone whose family survived on small loans from microfinance banks like LAPO, and who made it on grit. Lagos Life turns that joke into its opening mechanic, and it is the first thing every new player asks about.

How the lottery works

After you choose your traits and big dream, the game shows a "bet lottery" screen. You do not pick a side. The game decides, and you live with it. In the videos we reviewed, most players land on LAPO, which matches the joke that most Lagosians are LAPO babies.

Here is exactly what each side gets in the current build:

šŸ¦
LAPO Baby
ā€œSelf-made hits different.ā€
  • ₦60,000 LAPO loan to start — repay ₦12,000 every week
  • Hustle skill starts at 2
  • You learn every skill 25% faster
  • Start in Mushin or Yaba and work your way to Lekki
šŸ‘¶šŸ¾šŸ’°
Nepo Baby
ā€œDaddy knows people.ā€
  • Fully furnished Lekki flat — Daddy pays the rent
  • Your own car šŸš™ (just buy fuel)
  • Branch Manager at Daddy's friend's bank, from day one
  • ₦500,000 pocket money

LAPO Baby in practice

On paper the LAPO start looks harsh. In practice it is the better start for most players who plan to stick around.

  • The loan is small. You receive ₦60,000 and owe ₦72,000, repaid at ₦12,000 a week. That is six weeks of repayments. A Banking intern earns ₦11,600 a shift, so one shift a week covers it.
  • Skills grow 25% faster, forever. This stacks with your traits. A LAPO Tech Bro learns coding at roughly double the base rate, which gets you to the CcHub startup pitch (Coding 5, Charisma 3) noticeably sooner.
  • Hustle starts at 2. That unlocks better Instagram shop and WhatsApp Hustle payouts from day one.

The weakness is the first two or three days, when your money is thin and your home is one room. Keep your spending to food, a toilet, a stove and a laptop, and the LAPO start catches up quickly.

Nepo Baby in practice

The Nepo Baby skips the early grind completely: a furnished Lekki flat with rent paid by Daddy, a car, ₦500,000 pocket money and a Branch Manager job at a bank, which is rank 2 of the Banking career.

The catch is subtler. You do not get the 25% skill boost, and because you start high in Banking, you need Charisma to keep climbing. Nepo players who never train skills plateau early. Many also blow the pocket money at Quilox in the first week because, well, nepo baby behaviour.

Which first home should you pick?

The home you choose decides your weekly rent and how much spare cash you start with. Lagos options:

  • Mushin face-me-I-face-you is the cheapest at ₦2,400 a week, but the room is tiny (6Ɨ6 tiles) and you can only host three guests.
  • Yaba self-contain is the balanced pick: ₦6,000 a week, a 7Ɨ7 room and it is close to CcHub, UNILAG and Ojuelegba.
  • Lekki mini flat gives you four real rooms and space for eight guests, but ₦17,000 a week is heavy before you have a job.

If you start in Abuja or Port Harcourt the same three tiers exist:

The underrated third option: UNILAG student

Choosing Student life puts you in a UNILAG hall of residence. You still get rolled LAPO or Nepo, but as a fresher Mummy and Daddy pay your first session's fees and the LAPO loan disappears. You get:

  • a bunk for ₦1,200 a week, the cheapest rent in the game;
  • ₦3,000 allowance every Monday;
  • campus side gigs (typing assignments, braiding, selling puff-puff and recharge cards);
  • a degree at the end. Graduating with a First adds 20% to every shift you ever work.

It is slower, but it is the most forgiving way to learn the game. The full breakdown is in our UNILAG student guide.

So which start is better?

If you got LAPO: congratulations, you got the stronger long-term start. Follow the beginner's guide and do not panic about the loan.

If you got Nepo: use the head start to buy a business in week one instead of a VIP table. The ₦500,000 pocket money is exactly enough for a POS Stand, which pays most of your fuel and food costs on its own.

If you have not started yet and want control: pick the student start and play it slow.

Numbers come from the live game build and may change after updates.
