UNILAG Student Guide: Hostel Life, Degrees and Short Courses

Everything about the University of Lagos in Lagos Life: the student start, fees, lectures, exams, CGPA and degree classes, campus side hustles and the short courses anyone can take.
3 min read

UNILAG in Akoka is the biggest single location in Lagos Life: 35 activities, a hall of residence, a lagoon front for dates, and the only place you can earn a degree. You can enjoy it two ways: as a full-time student who starts life in the hostel, or as a working adult who drops in for short courses.

The student start

When you choose where to live, Student life puts you in the UNILAG hall. The perks:

  • 100L in the course you pick, with Mummy and Daddy paying the first session's fees.
  • ₦3,000 allowance every Monday, and no LAPO loan to repay.
  • A bunk for ₦1,200 a week, the cheapest rent in the game.
  • When you graduate, a degree class that adds up to 20% to every shift you ever work.

The hostel is tiny (6Γ—6) and only fits three guests, but you get Nap on Your Bunk and Bucket Bath in the Hall for free on campus, so needs are easy to manage.

Choosing a course

There are eight degree courses. Each trains a skill and leads into specific careers:

πŸŽ™οΈ Mass CommunicationFaculty of Social Sciences4CharismaContent Creator, Football

πŸ“Š AccountingFaculty of Management Sciences4HustleBanking, Trading, Retail
🎭 Creative ArtsFaculty of Arts4MusicMusic, DJ, Event Planning
🩺 Nursing ScienceCollege of Medicine5FitnessNursing

Pick the course that points at the career you want after school. Computer Science into Tech is the money pick; Law and Mass Communication suit charisma players; Nursing Science leads to the Nursing career and trains Fitness.

How school works

  • Matriculation day happens right after you move in; you take the oath at the Senate Building (and can pay ₦1,000 for a family photo).
  • School fees are ₦20,000 a session after the first one. Pay at the Senate Building.
  • Lectures are 45 minutes, two a day. You need at least three classes before you can sit the exam.
  • Evening tutorials (₦500), TDB night reading, past questions (₦300) and group study raise your exam prep.
  • Exams decide your grade points. Your final CGPA decides your class:
Degree classPay bonus on every shift
πŸ₯‡ First Class Honours+20%
πŸ₯ˆ Second Class Upper (2:1)+12%
πŸ₯‰ Second Class Lower (2:2)+6%
πŸŽ“ Third Class+3%

A CGPA of 4.5 or higher earns a First. 3.5 gets a 2:1, 2.4 a 2:2, anything lower a Third. Firsts and 2:1s also let you skip the lowest job rank and start as a graduate trainee. After convocation you have seven days to pack out of the hall.

Watch for campus events like ASUU strikes (lectures pause), the carnival and inter-hall games. They show up as pop-up choices and can trade exam prep for fun or skills.

Campus side hustles

Campus life worth doing

  • Five-a-side and Jog Round the Track are free Fitness training (Γ—1.2 and Γ—1.5).
  • SUG Campaign Rally and Group Study build Charisma.
  • Lagoon Front Date (₦1,000) is one of the cheapest date spots in the game.
  • Read in the Main Library trains Charisma at no cost.

Short courses (for everyone)

You do not need to be enrolled to learn. The Courses app on your phone offers short courses, each five 45-minute lessons held at UNILAG, with a three-question quiz after each one. Pass them all to earn a certificate, three blessings and a performance boost in the linked career.

The fees are paid in game naira per class. Money Smart (₦1,000) and Chef (₦1,500) are the cheapest; Pilot (₦4,000) is the most expensive. Several players have pointed out that the lesson outlines are a decent real-life introduction to each field too.

Is the student path worth it?

If you want a calm first week, yes. You avoid the loan and the rent pressure, learn the map around Yaba (CcHub is next door), and finish with a permanent pay bonus. If you want to be rich by day three, skip it and follow the CcHub route instead.
