On 1 October 2026, Nigeria's Independence Day, a browser game called Lagos Life went live at lagoslife.app. Within about three days it had passed a million players, and soon after two million, according to its developer. For a week it was all anyone on Nigerian Twitter, TikTok and WhatsApp could talk about.
The pitch: Sims, but make it Eko
The game's own description is the best summary: a Sims-style life game set in Lagos. Ride danfo, chop amala at Shitta, party at Quilox, survive NEPA, and make real friends. You create a Sim, get rolled as a Nepo Baby or a LAPO Baby, rent a room in Mushin or a flat in Lekki, and then do whatever Lagosians do: work, hustle, eat, flex, get arrested, fall in love.
What made it spread was recognition. The places are real (Amala Shitta, Balogun Market, CcHub, Elegushi Beach, the Afrika Shrine). The jokes are local: your phone has a Chowdeck app, rent is face-me-I-face-you, the EFCC shows up when you get too rich too fast. Even the class system is a meme Nigerians already use about each other.
Who built it
Lagos Life was made by Nigerian software developer Shalom Rayhamen (reported in some outlets as Shalom Mathew). In interviews with Nigerian tech media she described building the first version very quickly and has since been shipping updates almost daily: Abuja and Port Harcourt maps, an airport and a refinery, a casino, a stadium, insurance, player-run bus companies and more.
She has also talked openly about the numbers: about $46,900 in revenue in the first four days, according to figures she shared, and a claim that she would value the game at $1 billion while turning down a reported $100,000 offer. Those are her figures and valuation, not audited numbers, but they say a lot about how big the launch felt.
Why it stuck
- No download. It runs in any browser, which matters in a country where storage and data are expensive.
- Real players everywhere. The people at the buka and in Quilox are mostly other players, so every visit turns into gist.
- Money you can see. The Forbes list of the richest players turned the economy into a spectator sport.
- Chaos. Launch week had ATM hacking at CcHub, trillionaires from exploits, mass gifting, EFCC raids and rollbacks. People came for the drama and stayed for the game.
Is it a GTA killer?
No, and it doesn't need to be. Lagos Life is a life simulator: needs bars, buy mode, careers, relationships. GTA is an action game. What they share is a city, and Lagos Life's city happens to be one millions of Nigerians actually live in. That identity is its edge.
